Is Lockdown The Perfect Time To Get Things Done?

Lockdown has given us the opportunity to get things ticked off our to do lists which we haven’t had time to do in our busy pre-lockdown lives. Whether it’s finally getting round to read that book you’ve been meaning to read, or play that game, or work on that project, we’ve reached a time when we seem to have endless amounts of free time to get stuff done. However, things are still not getting done.

The washing still piles up, that skirting board you’ve been meaning to touch up with paint still goes untouched, and you’re still kicking yourself because you haven’t spoken to that family member as much as you think you probably should.

It makes a statement about us. No matter how busy, or not busy we are, we will only make time for the things which interest us or at least itch at us enough for us to do it.

It’s still important to try to motivate ourselves regardless.

Admittedly at the moment, we can’t travel, we can’t see friends or family in the flesh and we can’t have a cold pint in the local pub or eat fresh grub in our favourite restaurants, however, what we can do, and what we’ve done for thousands of years, is adapt to our current living situation. If we can learn how to make fire and hunt food, we can learn how to relax and feel more comfortable in our own skin.

Time is still moving forward, contrary to my last post, at a slower and a much calmer pace than before but it is still moving and we have to learn how to move at this reduced pace.

People have been adapting, just look at the sheer amount of sponsored posts on social media, the increased influencer posts from small businesses trying to grab your attention. People are trying to make the best of the lockdown and I truly believe that this is the opportunity to better ourselves in one way or another.

We could learn a new language and broaden our horizons, take the time to catch up and get on top of our chores because once we do, we’ll feel a whole lot less pressure. We can exercise and work on our fitness so we can show off at the beach when we’re able to visit. We can work on our business, bite sized chunks at a time, to keep our options open and our brains active.

Most importantly, we need to learn that just because it feels like it right now, as we sit in our homes, time has not stopped, and neither should we.

Keep moving, keep bettering ourselves so when we see each other next we can compliment each other on how we’ve grown.

Battling Negative Emotions Over Christmas

There’s a lot to be said about negative emotions, how they aren’t productive, how feeling them won’t change facts. However, negative emotions can be a great way to reflect on our lives, even when we don’t feel like it.

When we’re talking about negative emotions in this article we’re focusing on feelings of deep sadness or a bubbling and/or festering aggression towards a person, or a circumstance.

When we’re upset or angry, we tend to spiral in the same way which is why some of us end up crying when we’re angry or shouting when we’re sad. It’s during these times we can seemingly only see the bad things in life or the negative in people. However, noticing this behaviour is possibly the best route to self improvement.

If we learn to notice patterns when we start feeling these negative emotions then we can learn what triggers us and once we know what triggers us we can then learn to deal with it. Triggers can include everything, from the way someone taps their fingers on a table, to opening your bank account and realising you had less money than you thought.

Triggers are often part of a larger story.

If someone’s tapping finger is frustrating you to no end then its probably going to stretch a bit deeper than the surface noise. This frustration could be because you might dislike the person doing the tapping. Although, this sounds like a catch 22 as without delving deeper into your own psychosis, the cycle of finger tapping/ disliking anything this person does will continue on and on until the inevitable snap.

A better route would be to assess why this person is frustrating you. Is there a deeper reason within yourself which is causing this emotion?

The honest truth of it all is that nobody likes to take the blame for anything and without training your brain, this is no different in circumstances where it is you Vs you. For example, in the previous scenario, disliking a person could be a projection of parts of yourself you aren’t keen on.

Bob, your finger tapping work colleague, chats a lot about his terrible mother in law at work, and everything that creeps out of his seedy little mouth is negative. It’s his down trodden behaviour which puts you down in the dumps and makes the little things he does do annoy you.

However, as soon as you leave the office, you’ll be chatting your partner’s ear off about the terrible day you’ve had and suddenly you’re just as bad as Bob.

Hands up, I’ve done this many a time before and in the words of Karl Pilkington, sometimes we do need a good moan to make ourselves feel better. Yet there is a line, and it’s important to notice when we’ve crossed it in order to improve ourselves.

This Christmas time, a lot of people are feeling down in the dumps or frustrated.

It’s this time of year which is so important for us to look after our mental health and the mental health of those around us. By paying more attention to the attitudes of those around us and to our own behavioural traits, we can hope to better not only our own lives but the lives of friends who need positive mental encouragement.

Saying “Yes” To Everything?

I’ve found someone who matches my unbridled enthusiasm for life which has meant that the past few months have been jam packed with activity after activity which has been fantastic. However, as much fun as we’ve had socialising and generally enjoying life, it has meant the day to day things have rather lost their scheduling.

As someone who likes to plan, my spontaneous lifestyle of late has been rather refreshing. It has allowed me to let loose, learn that it’s not the end of the world if someone is a few minutes late, or changes plans at the last minute. Life is about adaptation, learning to be malleable and go with the flow and it has transformed me into someone I like very much.

There’s many a film, including Yes Man, which pose the question, what if you said yes to everything. Obviously blown out of proportion into something made for the big screen, the concept is still one worth considering.

Saying yes to more things instead of squirrelling away in my flat, for instance, has led me to new friendships, and exciting experiences. Saying “fuck it” and doing it, i.e booking a weeks holiday in Portugal on a whim, is also a great conversation starter and has been the beginning of a great adventure with Darren.

However fun the adventure is, we have to deal with the monotonous in order to make way for new experiences. We can’t travel the world without fresh pants after all.

We need to balance the mundane and the exciting in order to live a fulfilled and fruitful life and if that means spending Monday evenings washing my clothes and cracking out the ironing board then so be it. There will be other evenings for adventures.

Life, I believe, is about finding balance.

Getting Back Up Again After Failing

For once in my life I’ve felt comfortable in my situation even though I’m about as far from settled as one could be.

I recently took on a role working as a business developer for an interior design company, an exciting new challenge or so I first thought. As you may or may not know, I have a growing love for interior design and in order to follow my passion I decided to find an entry route into the industry by getting in contact with a local company who actually took an interest in my application. Upon starting, I realised it wasn’t what I was after.

A week of excuses, of telling myself that this was the job for me, I realised that I wasn’t suitable for the position and resigned, returning to my old job at a scrutinised retail base near my home town. Returning to familiarity.

Of course, I was disheartened. I had just taken a massive leap of faith and it hadn’t worked out the way I wanted it to. I wasn’t about to put unwanted hours into a company that had sent me home in tears because I wasn’t power hungry enough or driven by sales targets. Instead, I’ve taken a step backwards into a role I am comfortable maintaining while I expand my savings and work on my writing.

I’ve realised that this is what I value from life, the opportunity to grow and experience as much as I can. Although I may be coming up for my quarter century on this planet and I haven’t achieved much in the way of a career, I have achieved so much more in the way of experience and personal growth. Money and career can only take you so far in life, experience will carry you the rest of the way.

It’s taken a long time to write anything I’ve thought to be of value because of the chaotic nature of my experiences this past year or so but it’s days like today, when I find myself in between jobs, that I really feel oddly hopeful and inspired.

I’ve taken a breath and now I’m ready to dive back in, not with tri-weekly posts like before but with more thoughtful and inspiring content.

I hope you will join me in my musings, laugh with me at my terrible experiences, such as the time I embarrassed myself in a bar in Brighton, or learn from my (endearingly idiotic) mistakes.
